The exhibition's central museological idea examines the refugee question from the years preceding the Asia Minor Catastrophe to the present day, through the lens of what it means to belong to a place and of the notion of homeland — and of how these are shaped by the historical and socio-political conditions of each era. Within this framework two "places" take form, representing the refugees' "there" and "here": on the one hand their neighbourhoods in the East, on the other the districts of Thessaloniki. The exhibition material was selected with one concern above all: to summon memory through a journey from "there" to "here".
