Thessaloniki History Centre · Thessaloniki
The exhibition tells the story of a city that got back on its feet after a catastrophe that changed everything. The fire of 1917 destroyed the entire historic centre of Thessaloniki, yet out of the ashes a new era was born for the city — one full of opportunity and of plans for the future. Through archival photographs, books and maps of the period, the project lets the visitor come to know the city as it was before the disaster. It brings them close to the everyday lives of the people who lived through the tragedy, and to those who took on the creative task of rebuilding Thessaloniki. It is an account of resilience, of hope, and of the strength that history holds — showing how even the greatest disasters can become a source of inspiration and of new life.
