Ephorate of Antiquities of Trikala · Trikala
The exhibition was conceived as an itinerary — a journey through place and through time. Starting from the site of Theopetra, the visitor sets out in the Palaeolithic, travels among the archaeological sites of north-western Thessaly, and arrives at Meteora and the year 1881. By the end of that route they have covered 130,000 years of history. Moving from one archaeological site to the next brings us ever closer to the present, while along the way we gather information about the history of each place and its people.
The narrative is organised primarily by geography and secondarily by chronology, mapping the spatial spread and temporal development of civilisation in north-western Thessaly. Each archaeological site works as a narrative node, recounting different facets of the past, bringing out the particular character of each area while belonging to a distinct chronological frame. Through this structure the individual sites compose a wider narrative of the continuity of human presence. The visitor is invited to move through a living palimpsest of history, where every exhibit is a link in an unbroken chain of events, social developments and cultural transformations.
