Through the archival photographic material of the Museum of Photography, the visitor travels to the coastal cities of Asia Minor. In photographs and postcards we catch glimpses of the streets of Ephesus, Ayvalık and Smyrna, among so many other cities of Asia Minor in the early twentieth century, alive with people. And then — the catastrophe.

The exhibition design works towards the impression of an experience, using light and large panels to convey the intensity and the atmosphere of Smyrna during the destruction. Even so, the exhibition does not dwell only on loss, but on the power of memory: the stories that survive through images, the moments held fast forever. A journey, emotional and alive, that brings the visitor close to the world of people who left their homeland behind but kept hold of their lives and their hope.
